M&A is a great way for 3PLs to continue growing. A few advantages include the following:

Existing client base: When acquiring a 3PL, you will take over the existing client base the operation has. One of the hardest parts of starting a 3PL is acquiring your first few customers but growing through acquisition solves this problem rather than opening a new facility that may be empty.

Bi-coastal operations: 3PLs with bi-coastal operations have a huge advantage when working with mid-size to enterprise brands as they will look to reduce shipping costs as much as possible. By allowing a brand to distribute inventory across several warehouses under the same 3PL, a brand can reduce shipping times while saving money by keeping inventory in closer zones.

Expanded capabilities: Many FBA Prep centers and B2B-focused 3PLs have been trying to expand into DTC fulfillment. By acquiring a 3PL with these capabilities already, a 3PL can learn how to use technology and infrastructure that is already established before pushing into new client acquisition in the space.
